Bedtime Fire Safety Checks

Fires can occur at anytime including the night when everyone in your home is asleep.

Early warning of smoke present along with a well-rehearsed escape plan can save your lives but you can also reduce the risks of fires occurring at night by implementing a bedtime routine.

Bedtime Routine

  • Close all doors within your home to prevent smoke spreading if a fire starts.

  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on.

  • Do not leave the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher on overnight and unattended.

  • Do not leave mobile phones, tablets or e-cigarettes charging overnight especially in our bed or under pillows.

  • Check that your cooker has been turned off correctly – use the mains switch.

  • Turn portable heaters off and ensure solid fuel fires have been extinguished and cleaned out appropriately.

  • Put candles, incense sticks and oil burners out and never leave them burning when you are asleep.

  • Make sure cigarettes are completely out by wetting them and never smoke in bed

  • Make sure escape routes are clear of anything that may slow your escape down.

  • Keep door and window keys where everyone you live with can find them – on a dedicated hook is a good idea.

If you or anyone else in the home relies on mobility aids and methods of calling for help such as emergency pendants, ensure they are close to hand in case help is needed to assist with an escape.
