Candle Fire Safety

A common feature within many homes whether it be the scented variety or candles lit to create a scene within your home however they can present a fire hazard.

Tips for using candles and incense sticks safely

  • Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.

  • Be aware that tea lights get very hot and without proper holders can melt through plastic surfaces like a TV or bath.

  • The should be firmly held in heat-resistant holders and placed on a stable surface where they won’t be knocked over.

  • Keep them away from materials that might catch fire such as curtains and yourself.

  • Keep candles and other naked flames out of reach of children and pets.

  • Although not quite the same LED candles can be a great alternative due to the fact falling asleep with them lit will nor matter.


Celebrations such as Diwali, Bonfire Night, Halloween and Christmas can see us light a lot more candles than we normally would.

Throw into that mix the costumes, displays decorations and you have an increased risk of fire.

Top Tips

  • Make sure decorations are kept away from naked flames

  • Ensure costumes are fire retardant in accordance to European standard EN71-2.
